GDP growth of lockdown vs No/Lite lockdown (preliminary)
May 5, 2020
Here is a preliminary data on GDP growth until the first quarter (Q1) of 2020. Many countries have not reported their GDP data yet, the Philippines for instance will report this on Thursday May 7.
From countries with Q1 2020 data, it is obvious that the hard lockdowners -- CN, HK, FR, IT, SP, BE -- performed badly compared to the No lockdown or "Lite" lockdown -- VN, TW, KR.
The former of course will always say that bad/low growth, even contraction, is better compared to having even worse Covid deaths. This remains a hypothesis, unless a clear comorbidity reporting is made, Not possible for now as health system of many countries are overwhelmed.
